CAREER GAME PLAN
GET INVOLVED

The Career Game Plan helps student-athletes to develop their awareness and understanding of education, training and employment options, and to develop the skills, knowledge and capabilities to effectively manage their careers and transitions throughout their lives.

Step 1
  1. Take the Focus2 Career Assessment to determine career values, interests, skills, and personality
  2. If interested in healthcare, law, media, technology, real estate, or entrepreneurship, consult with a MACC staff member for an introduction to an industry advisor
  3. Begin developing a professional resume
  4. Create a profile and join Handshake, a Michigan job and internship search website, and Wolverine Network, a mentorship platform for Michigan Athletics
Step 2
  1. Apply for relevant on and off campus opportunities, focus on summer internships by September
  2. Shadow a professional in a potential career field or find a mentor
  3. Attend career workshops and events
  4. Get to know your professors well; they are critical to your success
  5. They can also provide a letter of recommendation and identify potential undergraduate research opportunities
  6. Develop a great introduction (30-sec elevator pitch)
  7. Attend an etiquette dinner for networking and dining
Step 3
  1. Develop an internship search strategy
  2. Research an appropriate graduate school, if applicable
  3. Research institutions that offer graduate programs of interest and request application materials and review submittal deadlines
  4. Develop your interviewing skills
  5. Attend campus wide career fairs and networking events
  6. Begin to build your professional wardrobe
  7. Prepare and develop your personal brand
Step 4
  1. Develop a plan for life after sports
  2. Attend multiple workshops, seminars, and networking events offered by the MACC office, campus Career Center, or your college to strengthen your job searching skills.
  3. Apply to 10+ full-time job opportunities; don’t limit yourself to a single company or position in your job search.
  4. If considering graduate school, consult with your faculty advisor, academic advisor, and/or the MACC office to discuss the next steps.
  5. Finalize your resume and cover letter
  6. Enhance your interview skills
